Stages & Difficulty Level
The Danube Cycle Path is predominantly flat and is considered one of the most pleasant long-distance cycle routes in Europe:
- mostly tarmac and well-maintained cycle paths
- hardly any significant inclines from Passau to Vienna
- mostly low-traffic routes
- Daily stages usually between 35 and 70 km, depending on the itinerary
- ideal for leisure cyclists, beginners and e-bike riders
On some sections towards Budapest, there may be short hilly stretches or sections on minor roads
Luggage transport on the Danube Cycle Path
On our multi-stage tours, your luggage is reliably transported from hotel to hotel. You cycle with just a light day pack and will find your suitcases waiting for you at the next stop on the route. On our hub-and-spoke cycling tours, your luggage stays at your fixed accommodation.
Best time to visit the Danube Cycle Path
The cycling season along the Danube generally runs from April to October:
- April to June: mild temperatures and blossoming countryside
- July and August: long days and plenty of opportunities for swimming
- September and October: grape harvest, pleasant temperatures and an autumnal atmosphere in the Wachau
May, June and September are particularly popular. We recommend booking well in advance for these dates.
