Itinerary
  • Day 1 - Individual arrival in Passau

You will travel individually to Passau and check into your comfortable hotel in the old town - surrounded by traditional inns and venerable restaurants. After handing over the travel documents and rental bikes, a three-river cruise is recommended - a Danube aperitif to get you in the mood.
Example of hotel: Hotel Passauer Wolf located directly in the old town
  • Day 2 - From Passau to Schlögener Schlinge, approx. 50 km

You cycle downstream along the Danube cycle path to Engelhartszell, where the only Trappist monastery on the Austrian Danube is located - a highlight of every cycle tour. By the evening in Obermühl at the latest, you can devote yourself entirely to culinary delights: After a pear frizzante called 'Donauperle', you are served a three-course beer culinary experience - each dish accompanied by a Mühlviertel beer speciality. This is what a real cycling holiday tastes like!.
Example of hotel: Gasthof Aumüller with beer garden und Danube terrafe in Obermühl
  • Day 3 - From Schlögener Schlinge to Linz, approx. 45 km

Cycle between hop fields and inn culture to Linz - a real highlight of any cycling holiday. Along the way, rustic inns invite you to enjoy a snack with Mühlviertel beers, the perfect refreshment for your cycling holiday. The classic awaits you in the historic centre of Linz: the original Linzer Torte in a traditional coffee house with Melange or Großer Schwarzer.
Example of hotel: Hotel B&B Linz-City-Ost in Linz near Josef's beer garden
  • Day 4 - From Linz to Ardagger, approx. 60 km

The Danube accompanies you on your cycle tour past orchards and tranquil meadow landscapes to the Mostviertel region - a nature experience on the Austrian Danube. It smells of hay, apple blossom and fermented pear cider - perfect for cycling along the Danube cycle path. The 'Spezerei' in Ardagger Abbey offers cheese, chutneys and high-proof spirits. We recommend a culinary stopover here during your cycling holiday. In the evening you can enjoy Mostviertel pub cuisine with soul.
Example of hotel: Landgasthof Winter with excellent cuisine in Ardagger
  • Day 5 - From Ardagger to Maria Taferl, approx. 45 km

Today you cycle through the wild and romantic Strudengau region on your cycle tour along the Danube cycle path and leave Upper Austria's beer and cider behind you - welcome to the wine country on the Austrian Danube! Maria Taferl towers high above the Danube - a spiritual highlight of your cycle tour. The evening ends in style: Enjoy your cycling holiday with a view in the Hotel Schachner's gourmet restaurant.
Example of hotel: Hotel Schachner in Maria Taferl Gourmet Restaurant with a splendid panorama terrace
  • Day 6 - From Maria Taferl to Weißenkirchen, approx. 50 km

After the magnificent Melk Abbey, you cycle on to the Wachau - one of the most beautiful regions on the Austrian Danube and a real highlight of any cycle tour along the Danube Cycle Path. Vines, wine-growing villages, apricot trees - everything looks like something out of a picture book and makes this section of your cycle tour unforgettable. You will get to know the wine region better during a wine tasting.
Example of hotel: Hotel Kirchenwirt in Weißenkirchen, lovely embedded in the surrounding vineyards
  • Day 7 - From Weißenkirchen to Vienna, approx. 45 km + train ride

From Krems, the train takes you to Tulln, from where you can continue your relaxed cycle tour through the Viennese suburbs and vineyards. The Viennese Gemischter Satz greets you at the Heurigen, and the Austrian Danube accompanies you one last time on your cycle tour. The crowning glory of your cycling holiday awaits you in the city centre: a visit to the imperial and royal court confectioner Demel. Hofzuckerbäcker Demel - for the sweetest memory of your cycling holiday.
Example of hotel: Arcotel Kaiserwasser in Vienna
  • Day 8 - Return transfer to Passau or extra nights

After breakfast, your journey of pleasure ends. In seasons A and B, the return journey is comfortably by train (please note: own bikes are not included). In season C, you can travel comfortably back to Passau by bus – or treat yourself to a few more enjoyable days in Vienna. Coffee house culture, Naschmarkt, schnitzel? The journey can go on a little longer.

Cycle path info

Austrian Danube

Cycle Path - Austrian Danube

Length: The Danube Cycle Path in Austria - starting in Passau and finishing in Vienna - is 326 kilometers long.

Route description: The Danube cycle path Passau - Vienna is very well developed. The Danube cycle path in Austria is asphalted practically everywhere. You cycle along roads with little traffic on your bike tours, usually even on both sides of the river.

Signposting: On your cycle tour in Austria, follow the special signposts.  The cycle paths in Upper and Lower Austria are marked with green, rectangular signs. The Danube cycle path in Austria is marked as such by name in most cases. (R1 in Upper Austria). Regional cycle paths connect to it.

Sights along the Danube Cycle Path Passau - Vienna

Passau: The city of three rivers welcomes you warmly on your cycle tour in Austria. This is where the Ilz and Inn flow into the Danube, causing it to swell into a mighty river. In Passau, the picturesque old town invites you to take a tour before the start of your cycle tour in Austria, which will certainly take you to Passau Cathedral with the largest church organ in the world. The Veste Oberhaus towers high above Passau.

Engelszell Abbey: Austria's only Trappist monastery is located almost directly on the Danube Cycle Path. In addition to the beautiful collegiate church, you should also visit the store on your cycling vacation in Austria, which sells excellent liqueurs from the monastery's own production.

Schlögener Schlinge: A mighty natural spectacle can be seen directly on the Danube cycle path during your cycle tour from Passau to Vienna. The river meanders around an extremely resistant rock formation. The short but steep climb to Schlögener Blick is definitely worth it. The full dimension of this attraction is revealed to you during the cycle tour in Austria.

Linz: This up-and-coming city stretches along both sides of the Danube in Upper Austria. We recommend a stroll through the charming old town with its baroque town houses. The Ars Electronica Center - Museum of the Future and the LENTOS Art Museum are located directly on the Danube Cycle Path. Cyclists who have more time at their disposal are recommended to take a ride up the Pöstlingberg on the steepest adhesion railroad in Europe. The voestalpine Stahlwelt opens the door to the world of steel in a unique way. Discover the development from pig iron to steel and stainless steel grades with the help of impressive exhibits and interactive stations. In the evening, Europe's most modern music theater attracts visitors to a performance.

Wachau: The UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau stretches between Melk and Krems in Lower Austria. The Danube Cycle Path leads directly through this famous Lower Austrian wine region. Even the Romans cultivated wine in terraces to the left and right of the Danube. Don't miss out on a visit to a wine tavern to sample the tangy Grüner Veltliner. Melk Benedictine Abbey can be seen from afar from the Danube Cycle Path. It impresses with its magnificent rooms and a well-known abbey library.

Vienna: Austria's capital is the destination of your cycle tour along the Danube Cycle Path. Numerous sights invite you to visit: Schönbrunn Park and Palace, the Prater, the Ringstrasse with its numerous magnificent buildings, the Hofburg and much more. Not forgetting the countless theaters, above all the Burgtheater, the Vienna State Opera and smaller variety theaters offer entertaining hours in the evening.
