Itinerary
  • Day 1 - Individual arrival in Passau

Begin your journey in Passau, where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers meet. Stroll through the baroque old town, visit the impressive cathedral with the world's largest cathedral organ, and enjoy the view from Veste Oberhaus. Stay in style at the Hotel Residenz, a former merchant's house right on the Danube. Example of hotel: Hotel Residenz in Passau
  • Day 2 - From Passau to Aschach, approx. 50 km + boat trip

Your journey begins leisurely with a boat trip through the narrow, forested Danube Valley. In Kasten, you switch to cycling and ride through one of Upper Austria's most beautiful landscapes. A stop is worthwhile at the baroque Engelszell Abbey, also famous for its Trappist liqueurs. The famous Schlögen Bend offers spectacular views of the Danube. Not far from the path, Vichtenstein Castle rises on a wooded rocky ridge high above the Danube. Your accommodation for today towers majestically over the river: the Hotel Faustschlössl, once built at the emperor's command – today a house full of stories, romance, and views of the Danube. Example of hotel: Hotel Faustschlössl in Feldkirchen
  • Day 3 - From Aschach to Linz, approx. 30 km

You follow the course of the Danube along quiet paths all the way to Linz. Passing the sparkling bathing lakes of Feldkirchen, you reach the modern, creative state capital. Culture enthusiasts visit the Lentos Art Museum, the futuristic Ars Electronica Center, or stroll through the old town of Linz. A piece of Linzer Torte in a café is a must. Example of hotel: Hotel Schwarzer Bär in Linz
  • Day 4 - From Linz to Bad Kreuzen, approx. 60 km

Your journey takes you through the fertile Machland and the tranquil floodplain forests of the Strudengau, once feared by Danube boatmen, today a peaceful natural paradise. In Grein, the “golden gem” of the Strudengau, the Greinburg rises majestically, one of the oldest residential castles in Austria. Since the 19th century, it has been owned by the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, which maintains close familial ties with the British royal family. In the evening, you will stay in one of the most exceptional accommodations of the trip: the Schatz.Kammer at Burg Kreuzen – once a noble residence, today stylishly restored with breathtaking views over the Danube Valley. Example of hotel: Schatz.Kammer in Burg Kreuzen
  • Day 5 - From Bad Kreuzen to Melk, approx. 50 km

The Danube meanders through granite rocks toward the magnificent entrance to the Wachau. In Melk, the baroque Melk Abbey welcomes you with golden facades and magnificent ceiling frescoes. You stay directly in the historic center in a traditional hotel with classic hospitality. Example of hotel: Hotel Post in Melk
  • Day 6 - From Melk to Dürnstein, approx. 30 km

Today you will cross the heart of the Wachau: past gentle vineyards, apricot orchards, and the famous wine villages of Spitz and Weißenkirchen. Your destination is Dürnstein – a true gem on the Danube. You will stay at the elegant Hotel Richard Löwenherz, located directly on the water and within the historic walls of a former Poor Clare monastery. From your terrace, you can look out over the Danube – and perhaps at the rock where Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned. Example of hotel: Hotel Richard Löwenherz in Dürnstein
  • Day 7 - From Dürnstein to Vienna, approx. 50 km + train ride

You say goodbye to the Wachau and cycle through the floodplain landscapes to Tulln, the city of the artist Egon Schiele. Afterwards, you reach Vienna by train, where the Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof impresses with its imperial flair and modern comfort. The Hofburg, Schönbrunn Palace, and the elegant coffeehouses are perfect for a stylish conclusion to your journey. Example of hotel: Hotel Steigenberger Herrenhof in Vienna
  • Day 8 - Return transfer to Passau or extra nights

After breakfast, return by train to Passau (transfer of own bike not included). Alternatively, you can book a private shuttle in a minibus for up to 4 passengers (transfer of own bike included) for even more comfort – or stay for a few extra nights in imperial Vienna.

Cycle path info

Austrian Danube

Cycle Path - Austrian Danube

Length: The Danube Cycle Path in Austria - starting in Passau and finishing in Vienna - is 326 kilometers long.

Route description: The Danube cycle path Passau - Vienna is very well developed. The Danube cycle path in Austria is asphalted practically everywhere. You cycle along roads with little traffic on your bike tours, usually even on both sides of the river.

Signposting: On your cycle tour in Austria, follow the special signposts.  The cycle paths in Upper and Lower Austria are marked with green, rectangular signs. The Danube cycle path in Austria is marked as such by name in most cases. (R1 in Upper Austria). Regional cycle paths connect to it.

Sights along the Danube Cycle Path Passau - Vienna

Passau: The city of three rivers welcomes you warmly on your cycle tour in Austria. This is where the Ilz and Inn flow into the Danube, causing it to swell into a mighty river. In Passau, the picturesque old town invites you to take a tour before the start of your cycle tour in Austria, which will certainly take you to Passau Cathedral with the largest church organ in the world. The Veste Oberhaus towers high above Passau.

Engelszell Abbey: Austria's only Trappist monastery is located almost directly on the Danube Cycle Path. In addition to the beautiful collegiate church, you should also visit the store on your cycling vacation in Austria, which sells excellent liqueurs from the monastery's own production.

Schlögener Schlinge: A mighty natural spectacle can be seen directly on the Danube cycle path during your cycle tour from Passau to Vienna. The river meanders around an extremely resistant rock formation. The short but steep climb to Schlögener Blick is definitely worth it. The full dimension of this attraction is revealed to you during the cycle tour in Austria.

Linz: This up-and-coming city stretches along both sides of the Danube in Upper Austria. We recommend a stroll through the charming old town with its baroque town houses. The Ars Electronica Center - Museum of the Future and the LENTOS Art Museum are located directly on the Danube Cycle Path. Cyclists who have more time at their disposal are recommended to take a ride up the Pöstlingberg on the steepest adhesion railroad in Europe. The voestalpine Stahlwelt opens the door to the world of steel in a unique way. Discover the development from pig iron to steel and stainless steel grades with the help of impressive exhibits and interactive stations. In the evening, Europe's most modern music theater attracts visitors to a performance.

Wachau: The UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau stretches between Melk and Krems in Lower Austria. The Danube Cycle Path leads directly through this famous Lower Austrian wine region. Even the Romans cultivated wine in terraces to the left and right of the Danube. Don't miss out on a visit to a wine tavern to sample the tangy Grüner Veltliner. Melk Benedictine Abbey can be seen from afar from the Danube Cycle Path. It impresses with its magnificent rooms and a well-known abbey library.

Vienna: Austria's capital is the destination of your cycle tour along the Danube Cycle Path. Numerous sights invite you to visit: Schönbrunn Park and Palace, the Prater, the Ringstrasse with its numerous magnificent buildings, the Hofburg and much more. Not forgetting the countless theaters, above all the Burgtheater, the Vienna State Opera and smaller variety theaters offer entertaining hours in the evening.
