Itinerary
  • Day 1 - Individual arrival in Passau

You start your cycle holiday along the Danube with a stroll through Passau, the bishop's town with its picturesque old town, the cathedral and the Veste Oberhaus. The first overnight stay of your cycle tour from Passau to Vienna is in the Hotel Residenz. A hotel built into the walls of a 400-year old former shop and situated in the historical old town along the Danube cycle path. Check-in and you receive your travel documents. Handover of your rented bike takes place in our bike centre, individual test journey to your hotel with your hired bike. Example of hotel: Hotel Residenz in Passau
  • Day 2 - From Passau to Aschach, approx. 50 km + boat trip

With the Danube boat, you reach Kasten, from where you cycle leisurely through the romantic Upper Danube Valley via the Monastery Engelszell and the Schlögener Schlinge to Aschach. You stay overnight at Hotel Faustschlössl overlooking the river. The castle was originally established more than 500 years ago, on behest of the emperor. Example of hotel: Hotel Faustschlössl in Feldkirchen
  • Day 3 - From Aschach to Linz, approx. 30 km

Past the lakes of Feldkirchen you cycle along Danube's north side to Linz, the European City of Culture 2009. Today you stay overnight in the top-modern hotel on the cathedral square of the magnificent Marien Cathedral. Example of hotel: Hotel Schwarzer Bär in Linz
  • Day 4 - From Linz to Bad Kreuzen, approx. 60 km

Beautiful surrounding with fruitful meadows with apple and pear trees lining the cycle path from Linz to the region Strudengau. The fruits are mostly used for fruit juice production and so name giving for the whole region. Example of hotel: Schatz.Kammer in Burg Kreuzen
  • Day 5 - From Bad Kreuzen to Melk, approx. 50 km

The Danube made a narrow riverbed by granite rock on its way through the Strudengau. You cycle towards the lovely Wachau Valley. The magnificent Abbey of Melk also called the gate of the Wachau Valley welcomes you sitting high enthroned over the Danube. Example of hotel: Hotel Post in Melk
  • Day 6 - From Melk to Dürnstein, approx. 30 km

Your home for tonight is the beautiful Castle Dürnstein a nearly 400-year old building located in the middle of the picturesque Dürnstein overlooking majestically the river. By the way – Richard Löwenherz stayed during his captivity in Castle Dürnstein absolutely less in royal style than you on your cycle vacation in Austria. Example of hotel: Schloss Dürnstein in Dürnstein
  • Day 7 - From Dürnstein to Vienna, approx. 50 km + train ride

The second-last day of your cycle tour along the Danube cycle path leads you to Tulln. For the interested ones in art we warmly recommend the Egon-Schiele Museum, dedicated to the great son of the town. By train, you arrive in Vienna, the final destination of your Austrian cycle holiday. The city unfolds her imperial charm during a journey along the Ringstrasse, a visit of Castle Schönbrunn and its park or in the numerous museum. Only a few hundred meters from the Hofburg Palace, admits the first district the Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof enchants its guests during their cycling holiday in Austria. The different style directions of the Viennese epochs, from the baroque to Art Déco an old Austrian flair. Example of hotel: Hotel Steigenberger Herrenhof in Vienna
  • Day 8 - Return transfer to Passau or extra nights

Return transfer from your cycling holiday by train (transfer of own bike not included) For a fee you have the possibility to return to Passau in a Minibus for up to 4 passengers (transfer of own bike included).

Cycle path info

Austrian Danube

Cycle Path - Austrian Danube

Length: The Danube Cycle Path in Austria - starting in Passau and finishing in Vienna - is 326 kilometers long.

Route description: The Danube cycle path Passau - Vienna is very well developed. The Danube cycle path in Austria is asphalted practically everywhere. You cycle along roads with little traffic on your bike tours, usually even on both sides of the river.

Signposting: On your cycle tour in Austria, follow the special signposts.  The cycle paths in Upper and Lower Austria are marked with green, rectangular signs. The Danube cycle path in Austria is marked as such by name in most cases. (R1 in Upper Austria). Regional cycle paths connect to it.

Sights along the Danube Cycle Path Passau - Vienna

Passau: The city of three rivers welcomes you warmly on your cycle tour in Austria. This is where the Ilz and Inn flow into the Danube, causing it to swell into a mighty river. In Passau, the picturesque old town invites you to take a tour before the start of your cycle tour in Austria, which will certainly take you to Passau Cathedral with the largest church organ in the world. The Veste Oberhaus towers high above Passau.

Engelszell Abbey: Austria's only Trappist monastery is located almost directly on the Danube Cycle Path. In addition to the beautiful collegiate church, you should also visit the store on your cycling vacation in Austria, which sells excellent liqueurs from the monastery's own production.

Schlögener Schlinge: A mighty natural spectacle can be seen directly on the Danube cycle path during your cycle tour from Passau to Vienna. The river meanders around an extremely resistant rock formation. The short but steep climb to Schlögener Blick is definitely worth it. The full dimension of this attraction is revealed to you during the cycle tour in Austria.

Linz: This up-and-coming city stretches along both sides of the Danube in Upper Austria. We recommend a stroll through the charming old town with its baroque town houses. The Ars Electronica Center - Museum of the Future and the LENTOS Art Museum are located directly on the Danube Cycle Path. Cyclists who have more time at their disposal are recommended to take a ride up the Pöstlingberg on the steepest adhesion railroad in Europe. The voestalpine Stahlwelt opens the door to the world of steel in a unique way. Discover the development from pig iron to steel and stainless steel grades with the help of impressive exhibits and interactive stations. In the evening, Europe's most modern music theater attracts visitors to a performance.

Wachau: The UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau stretches between Melk and Krems in Lower Austria. The Danube Cycle Path leads directly through this famous Lower Austrian wine region. Even the Romans cultivated wine in terraces to the left and right of the Danube. Don't miss out on a visit to a wine tavern to sample the tangy Grüner Veltliner. Melk Benedictine Abbey can be seen from afar from the Danube Cycle Path. It impresses with its magnificent rooms and a well-known abbey library.

Vienna: Austria's capital is the destination of your cycle tour along the Danube Cycle Path. Numerous sights invite you to visit: Schönbrunn Park and Palace, the Prater, the Ringstrasse with its numerous magnificent buildings, the Hofburg and much more. Not forgetting the countless theaters, above all the Burgtheater, the Vienna State Opera and smaller variety theaters offer entertaining hours in the evening.

OÖ Touristik GmbH

In 1990 the OÖ Touristik performed a pioneering work on the sector of organised cycle holidays: the first bookable cycle tour along the Danube including luggage transfer. Already a year later we offered the first group tours. Over the years the offers of the cycle holidays has expanded throughout Europe and are as popular as ever. During the last 30 years we have expanded the portfolio on mountain bike tours, cycle holidays by bike and boat, group tours and hiking holidays as well as winter and wellness holidays. The organisation and handling of international congresses and events meanwhile adds to the successful enterprise sections.
