An overview of your cycle tour along the Tauern Cycle Route
The Tauern Cycle Path from Krimml to Salzburg and Passau links the alpine landscape of the Hohe Tauern National Park with the Salzach Valley and the Bavarian-Austrian border region. Depending on the tour you choose, you can enjoy a one-way journey or a circular route through the Salzburg region.
- Krimml Waterfalls & Hohe Tauern National Park: The cycle tour begins at Austria’s highest waterfalls. From Krimml, the Tauern Cycle Route leads through the Oberpinzgau region, offering views of the three-thousand-metre peaks.
- Mittersill, Kaprun & Zell am See: Cycling along the River Salzach, you’ll pass through alpine villages and varied valley landscapes. Depending on the route, there’s a detour to Kaprun or to Lake Zell.
- Salzburg – UNESCO World Heritage Site: The city of Mozart, with its historic old town and Hohensalzburg Fortress, is a cultural highlight and, depending on the trip, either a stop-off point or the final destination.
- Burghausen & Passau: On longer tours, you’ll follow the Salzach and Inn rivers via the border town of Burghausen to Passau. The ‘City of Three Rivers’ marks the end of the cycle tour.
Stages & Difficulty Level
The Tauern Cycle Path is mostly a moderate ride:
- mostly tarmac cycle paths and quiet side roads
- from Krimml, heading downstream for long stretches
- a few climbs and undulating sections
- Daily stages usually between 40 and 70 km, depending on the itinerary
- well suited to active leisure cyclists and e-bike riders
A good level of fitness is recommended. Circular routes and some route variations may include additional elevation gain.
Best time of year to cycle the Tauern Cycle Route
The season for a cycling trip along the Tauern Cycle Path usually runs from May to October:
- May–June: the Krimml Waterfalls at their fullest and the Alpine valleys in bloom
- July–August: long days and opportunities for swimming in the lakes
- September–October: clear mountain views and tranquil autumn landscapes
For the higher-altitude starting point in Krimml, June to September are particularly pleasant.
Duration
Depending on the route, a cycling tour along the Tauern Cycle Route usually takes between 6 and 8 days.
