The Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Path links varied coastal landscapes with the Hanseatic cities of northern Germany. Depending on the route you choose, you’ll cycle through Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania or as far as the island of Rügen.
- Lübeck & Lübeck Bay: Lübeck’s UNESCO-listed old town, Travemünde and popular seaside resorts such as Timmendorfer Strand make for a charming start to a cycling holiday on the Baltic Sea coast.
- Wismar, Kühlungsborn & Rostock: Brick Gothic architecture, long beaches and elegant seaside resorts characterise Mecklenburg’s Baltic Sea coast. The Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Rostock offer a wealth of cultural variety.
- Fischland-Darß-Zingst: Between the Baltic Sea and the Bodden, you’ll cycle through dune landscapes, coastal woodlands and small fishing villages. This chain of peninsulas is one of the scenic highlights of the Baltic Sea Cycle Route.
- Stralsund & the island of Rügen: Stralsund’s UNESCO-listed old town and Germany’s largest island delight visitors with chalk cliffs, seaside resorts and the Jasmund National Park.
Stages & Difficulty Level
The cycle tours along the Baltic Sea Cycle Route are moderate and varied:
- predominantly well-maintained cycle paths and quiet side roads
- flat to gently undulating routes
- a few sections along forest, field or coastal paths
- Daily stages usually between 35 and 70 km, depending on the tour
- well suited to leisure cyclists and e-bike riders
Short climbs along cliffs and headwinds can make some stages more challenging. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
Best time of year to cycle the Baltic Sea Cycle Path
The season for a cycling holiday on the Baltic Sea generally runs from April to October:
- April–May: quiet coastal towns and crisp spring air
- June–August: long days, breaks on the beach and lovely weather for swimming
- September–October: a mild coastal climate and a relaxed late season
June and September are particularly popular. During the summer months, it is advisable to book well in advance due to high demand.
