Most cycling tours in Germany are undertaken individually rather than as part of a guided group. This means you set your own pace, decide when to take breaks and determine the length of your sightseeing stops. The best time of year for a cycling holiday in Germany
The cycling season in Germany generally runs from April to October:
- April to June: mild temperatures and blossoming countryside
- July and August: long days and ideal conditions for lakeside and coastal tours
- September and October: grape harvest, autumn colours and quieter cycle paths
The North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts are particularly popular from May to September. September and October are also ideal for wine regions such as the Moselle and the Main.
Levels of difficulty
Cycle routes in Germany offer suitable tours to suit a range of abilities:
- Easy: mainly flat riverside, lakeside and coastal cycle routes, for example along the Moselle Cycle Route, Lake Constance Cycle Route, Main Cycle Route and along the North Sea and Baltic Sea
- Moderate: longer daily stages and occasional inclines, such as on the Altmühltal Cycle Route, the Elbe Cycle Route, the Inn Cycle Route or the Isar Cycle Route
- Challenging: hilly routes, greater elevation gain or demanding daily distances, for example on selected sections along the Inn and Isar rivers or in the German Alpine foothills
Depending on the cycle tour, the daily stages are usually between 30 and 70 kilometres. A good level of basic fitness and regular cycling experience are an advantage. All routes are also very well suited to e-bikes.
