The Enns Cycle Path winds its way through stunning mountain scenery and varied river valleys in the heart of Austria. Depending on the cycle tour you choose, you’ll follow the River Enns from the Salzburg Sportwelt via Radstadt and Schladming into Styria. Passing Admont Abbey and the Gesäuse National Park, the route continues into Upper Austria and on to the Danube.

An overview of your cycle tour along the Enns Cycle Path
The Enns Cycle Path links alpine mountain landscapes, towns steeped in tradition and the varied river landscapes of the Enns. The route passes through the Austrian federal states of Salzburg, Styria and Upper Austria.
Many cycling tours begin in the Radstadt area. From there, you follow the Enns through the wide valley towards Schladming. The Dachstein massif and the peaks of the Niedere Tauern provide an impressive backdrop.
Via Gröbming and Liezen, you reach Admont with its famous Benedictine abbey. The Enns Cycle Route then leads through or alongside the scenically striking Gesäuse National Park. Further downstream, wooded valleys and historic towns await you. Depending on your route, you’ll cycle via Steyr to Enns and thus close to where the Enns flows into the Danube.
Level of difficulty
The Enns Cycle Path is mainly of moderate to challenging difficulty:
- flat and gently undulating sections in the Enns Valley
- several uphill and downhill sections
- well-maintained cycle paths and side roads with little traffic
- paved natural and gravel paths in places
There are elevation changes to negotiate, particularly on the alpine sections and in the Gesäuse area. Some sections may be more challenging due to ascents, descents or varying surfaces.
Best time of year to visit the Enns Cycle Path
The best time of year for a cycling holiday along the Enns Cycle Path is from May to October:
- May and June: flowering meadows, rivers full of water and pleasant temperatures
- July and August: long days and good conditions for alpine stages
- September and October: clear visibility, quieter paths and atmospheric autumnal landscapes
June and September often offer particularly pleasant conditions for cycle touring. Due to the alpine location, the weather and temperatures along the route can change rapidly. You should therefore carry rainwear and warm clothing with you, even in summer.

The Enns Cycle Path is mainly of moderate difficulty, though some sections are challenging. Alongside flat stretches in the Enns Valley, there are several uphill and downhill sections. A good level of fitness, regular cycling experience and the ability to ride a bike confidently are recommended.
Depending on the cycling tour you choose, the daily stages are usually between around 40 and 85 kilometres. The exact distance depends on the tour option and the accommodation booked. As well as the distance in kilometres, you should also take the elevation gain into account when making your choice.
On cycling tours marked as such, luggage transport from hotel to hotel is included. You hand in your main luggage at your accommodation in the morning and cycle with only a light day pack. Your suitcase will be transported to your next booked accommodation.

The cycle tour is organised on an individual basis, without a fixed group. You decide your own departure time, pace and when to take breaks.
The route follows well-maintained cycle paths, quiet back roads and paved riverside paths. Some sections run along natural or gravel paths. In built-up areas and on connecting routes, there may be short stretches with some traffic.

The best time to visit is generally from May to October. June and September are often particularly pleasant. In the height of summer, the long days allow plenty of time for each stage of the journey. However, due to the alpine location, cycling holidaymakers should expect changeable weather at any time of year.
