Bicycle Tours Along the Main River
In 2008, the ADFC awarded the Main Cycle Route five stars, making it the first German cycling route to receive this distinction. Ninety percent of the route is paved and winds through natural and scenic areas.
On your bike tour along the Main Cycle Route, you’ll discover two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Old Town of Bamberg, which boasts Germany’s largest preserved historic city center, and the Würzburg Residence. Other highlights along the route include Franconia, Schweinfurt, Aschaffenburg, and Würzburg, with its Marienberg Fortress, St. Kilian’s Cathedral, and historic town hall.

The Main Cycle Path is mostly easy to moderate:

The majority of the route runs directly alongside the river without any long inclines. Depending on the tour and accommodation chosen, there may be short climbs or sections away from the banks of the Main.
Best time of year to visit the Main Cycle Path
The best time of year for a cycling holiday along the Main is from April to October:
- April to June: blossoming countryside and pleasant temperatures
- July and August: long days and bustling towns and wine-growing villages
- September and October: grape harvest, quieter paths and colourful autumnal landscapes
May, June and September often offer particularly pleasant conditions for cycle touring. Those wishing to experience the Franconian wine villages during the grape harvest will find late summer and early autumn a particularly atmospheric time to travel. Early booking is recommended for popular weekend, bank holiday and holiday periods, as well as during regional wine festivals.

The Main Cycle Path is mostly easy to moderately difficult. The route runs close to the river for long stretches and is largely flat. Short inclines may occur, particularly on access roads to accommodations, town centers, or attractions. A normal level of fitness and the ability to ride a bike safely are generally sufficient.
