The Elbe Cycle Path combines impressive cultural cities, tranquil river landscapes, and the striking sandstone cliffs of Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland.
Starting in Prague, your cycling trip first follows the Vltava River to Mělník, where the Vltava and Elbe rivers converge. You then cycle via Litoměřice and Děčín through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains into Germany. Passing through Bad Schandau and Pirna, you finally reach Dresden, the capital of Saxony.
Level of difficulty
The Elbe Cycle Path between Prague and Dresden is mostly easy to moderate:
- mostly flat stretches along the Vltava and Elbe rivers
- well-maintained and largely signposted cycle paths
- predominantly tarmac or well-surfaced paths
- Daily stages usually between 40 and 75 km, depending on the itinerary
- ideal for leisure cyclists and e-bike riders
On the first stages along the Vltava and in certain sections of Northern Bohemia, there may be a few short climbs. A reasonable level of fitness and regular cycling experience are an advantage for the daily stages; no specific sporting experience is required.
Best time of year to visit the Elbe Cycle Path
The best time of year for a cycling trip from Prague to Dresden is from April to October:
- April to June: blossoming countryside and pleasant temperatures
- July and August: long days and lively towns along the route
- September and October: quieter cycle paths and atmospheric autumnal landscapes
May, June and September offer particularly pleasant conditions for cycle touring. Early booking is recommended for popular weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

The path is predominantly easy to moderate. Large sections run close to the Vltava and Elbe Rivers, without any long climbs. There may be a few short uphill stretches and sections with varying surfaces. A normal level of fitness and confidence on a bicycle are generally sufficient.
Depending on the cycling trip booked, the daily stages are generally between 40 and 75 kilometres. The exact distance depends on your chosen itinerary and overnight stops. An e-bike also makes longer stages easy to manage.
