An overview of your cycle tour along the Mur Cycle Path
The Mur Cycle Path links alpine mountain landscapes, historic towns, green river valleys and the Mediterranean-style landscape of Southern Styria. The route follows the River Mur from the Lungau region of Salzburg through Styria and offers a varied blend of nature, culture and regional delights.
Many cycling tours start in St. Michael im Lungau. From there, the Mur Cycle Route leads via Tamsweg into Styria and on to Murau. You then cycle through the upper Mur Valley via Judenburg, Zeltweg and Leoben to Bruck an der Mur.
South of Bruck, the landscape changes progressively. Via Frohnleiten, you’ll reach Graz, the capital of Styria. The route then continues via Leibnitz and the South Styrian countryside to Bad Radkersburg on the Austrian-Slovenian border.
Level of Difficulty
The Mur Cycle Path ist mostly easy to moderate:
- flat to hilly stretches along the Mur River
- mostly well-maintained and signposted bike paths
- paved paths, side roads with little traffic, and paved nature trails
- daily stages typically range from 45 to 65 kilometers, depending on the cycling tour
- longer downhill sections, but also some occasional uphill stretches
In the Salzburg Lungau region and the upper Mur Valley, there are a few hilly sections and short climbs to tackle. Between Bruck an der Mur, Graz, and Bad Radkersburg, the route becomes increasingly flat. However, occasional climbs, varying surfaces, and sections away from the river may still occur.
Best time of year to visit the Mur Cycle Path
The best time of year for a cycling trip along the Murradweg is from May to October:
- May and June: blossoming countryside and pleasant temperatures
- July and August: long days and bustling towns along the route
- September and October: grape harvest, quieter paths and atmospheric autumnal landscapes
June and September often offer particularly pleasant conditions for cycle touring. In the upper Mura Valley, temperatures can be cooler than in the south of Styria due to the altitude. Functional clothing suitable for varying weather conditions is therefore recommended along the entire route.
