The Alpe-Adria Cycle Route from Salzburg to Grado stretches for around 400 kilometres from the Austrian Alps to the Italian Adriatic coast. This varied cycling tour links the Salzburg region, Carinthia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
- Salzburg & the Gastein Valley: From the city of Mozart, the route follows the River Salzach into the Alpine mountains.
- Carinthia & Tarvisio: Via Bad Gastein and a train transfer through the Tauern Tunnel, you’ll reach Carinthia and continue across the border into Italy.
- Friuli & Grado: You’ll cycle along former railway lines through Tarvisio, Udine and Aquileia to the seaside at Grado.

The Alpe-Adria Cycle Route is one of the most enjoyable ways to cycle across the Alps:
- mostly well-maintained cycle paths and quiet back roads
- longer climbs, particularly on the first stages
- plenty of downhill sections and former railway lines in Italy
- Daily stages usually between 35 and 70 km
- well suited to leisure cyclists and e-bike riders

The best time of year for a cycling trip from Salzburg to Grado is between April and October:
- April–June: mild temperatures and blossoming countryside
- July–August: summery weather and a beach holiday on the Adriatic
- September–October: pleasant temperatures and a quieter travelling experience

The Alpe-Adria Cycle Route, which is around 410 kilometres long, has linked the city of Mozart, Salzburg, with Grado on the Italian Adriatic coast since 2012. The route runs through the Salzburg region and Carinthia to Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Thanks to the Tauern Tunnel between Böckstein and Mallnitz, former railway lines and numerous tunnels, this Alpine crossing is also well suited to leisure cyclists.
Your cycling tour along the Alpe-Adria Cycle Route begins in Salzburg, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Cycling alongside the Salzach and Gasteiner Ache rivers, you’ll ride through the Gastein Valley and cross the main Alpine ridge by train. In Carinthia, the route continues via Spittal an der Drau and Villach on to Italy. From Tarvisio, you’ll follow a spectacular former railway line through the Kanaltal valley to Venzone, Udine and Aquileia, before reaching the Grado lagoon.

Variations on the Alpe-Adria Cycle Route
- Salzburg–Grado: The classic Alpine crossing from Austria to the sea – usually in eight days.
- Villach–Grado: The shorter route leads from Carinthia via Tarvisio and Udine to the Adriatic Sea.
- Venice–Poreč: A complementary cycle tour along the upper Adriatic coast via Grado and Trieste to Slovenia and Istria. From Trieste, the route follows part of the historic Parenzana trail to Poreč.
