Salzkammergut Cycle Path
Wolfgangsee, Traunsee, Attersee and Mondsee
A cycle tour in Austria offers the best way to discover the Salzkammergut. The cycle tours fill every day with unforgettable memories. The beauty of this unique landscape, with its mountains and lakes with drinking water quality, gives you strength and joie de vivre.
Length:
The Salzkammergut Cycle Trail stretches for approx. 345 km on a circular route starting from the city of Salzburg. The OÖ Touristik cycle tours cover parts or sections of the Salzkammergut Cycle Trail.
Route description:
The cycle tours are mainly on dedicated cycle paths and low-traffic side roads. For sections on main roads, a boat or train ride is an alternative. The route is mostly asphalted and ideal for touring bikes and trekking bikes.
The special feature of the Salzkammergut Cycle Trail is that it leads through three federal states, namely Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria. Unlike classic cycle tours along rivers, the main route of the Salzkammergut Cycle Trail always has smaller and larger climbs to overcome. However, the differences in altitude are usually not very great. Some mountain stages can be avoided by changing to the train or boat (especially the section from Bad Goisern to Bad Aussee). The 345 km long Salzkammergut Cycle Trail is a circular cycle tour.
Difference in altitude:
A total of 1,850 m of altitude difference has to be mastered on this cycle tour in Austria.
Difficulty level:
With the inclusion of boat and train to avoid main roads and inclines, the Salzkammergut Cycle Trail is also suitable for families with children aged 10 and over. Individual secured and flat cycle tour sections along lakes (e.g. Wolfgangsee, Hallstätter See) and rivers (e.g. the Traun between Bad Ischl and Bad Goisern) are also suitable for young cyclists.
From the Traunsee to the Attersee there are a few small climbs to overcome. The “mountain stage on the Salzkammergut cycle path” from Hallstatt/Obertraun to Bad Aussee or vice versa is best overcome by changing to the train. Shortcuts” by boat can be taken on Lake Traunsee, Lake Attersee and Lake Hallstatt.
Signposting:
The signposting is organized by the provinces of Salzburg, Upper Austria and Styria. The “Salzkammergutradweg” is signposted in Salzburg and Styria. (Source: Esterbauer Verlag). For the Upper Austrian section, around 185 km, uniform signposting (R2) as the “Salzkammergutweg” was realized in 2004.ergutradweg“.
Highlights on Salzkammergut Cycle Path
Salzburg: The city of Mozart offers a wealth of sights: the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Salzburg's Old Town with the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Getreidegasse, Mozart's birthplace and much more. Culturally and above all musically, the city is world-famous for the Salzburg Festival. This takes place every year from mid-July to the end of August.
St. Wolfgang: This town on the shores of Lake Wolfgang is famous for the musical comedy “Im weißen Rössl am Wolfgangsee”. The Schafbergbahn cable car climbs the 1,782 m high Schafberg from the town center.
Bad Ischl: The former summer residence of the Habsburgs still exudes imperial flair in the 21st century. A visit to the imperial villa - as well as a stop at the k.u.k. Zauner coffee house - is a must.
Hallstatt: The town lies directly on the shores of Lake Hallstatt. Over 3,000 years ago, salt was mined from the salt mountain behind it and sold in all directions. The show mine is a popular excursion destination in the region..
UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt-Dachstein: The Five Fingers platform on the Krippenstein offers the best view of the entire region. The cable car covers the 2,108 vertical meters in 2 stages. At the middle station, you can also visit the unique Dachstein Ice Caves and the Mammut Cave with its stalactite columns.
Gmunden: The town is picturesquely situated at the northern end of Lake Traunsee. It is a regular filming location for television reports and the setting for TV series. One of the most famous buildings is the Seeschloss Ort. The green and white Gmunden porcelain is also known far beyond the borders.
Salzkammergut world of lakes: A plus for cyclists on the Salzkammergut Cycle Path are the numerous large and small bathing lakes with drinking water quality and bathing centers, which invite you to relax and loosen your muscles. Dive into Attersee, Mondsee, Fuschlsee and all other lakes not mentioned by name.
