Itinerary
  • Day 1 - Individual arrival in Schweinfurt

Your cycling tour along the Main Cycle Route begins in the former imperial city of Schweinfurt, where culture, enjoyment, and the Franconian way of life flow together harmoniously. After arriving independently, you will check into your comfortable mid-range hotel, the ideal starting point for a relaxed start to your cycling vacation.
Example of hotel: Hotel Ross in Schweinfurt
  • Day 2 - From Schweinfurt to Sommerach, approx. 40 km

Your first stage tour on the Main Cycle Route takes you into one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Franconia. Cycling between rolling hills and the first sun-drenched vineyards, you will experience the characteristic natural scenery of the famous Volkacher Mainschleife. You will cycle leisurely through idyllic wine villages and enjoy impressive views of the Franconian wine country.
Example of hotel: Hotel Weinblatt in Sommerach
  • Day 3 - From Sommeracht to Ochsenfurt/Sommerhausen, approx. 35-45 km

Your next stage on the Main Cycle Route takes you further along romantic wine-growing landscapes and traditional towns. At a leisurely pace, you will first reach Dettelbach, a medieval gem with an almost completely preserved city wall. Your cycling tour continues through the sunny Franconian wine country to Kitzingen. The Main Cycle Route then takes you through the pretty town of Marktbreit with its magnificent Renaissance buildings to Ochsenfurt, one of the largest medieval old towns along the Main.
Example of hotel: Weingut Meintzinger in Ochsenfurt/Sommerhausen
  • Day 4 - From Ochsenfurt/Sommerhausen to Karlstadt, approx. 45 km

On a leisurely bike ride, you will first reach Eibelstadt, whose romantic townscape is surrounded by impressive city walls. The route continues to Randersacker, one of Franconia's most important wine-growing towns. Wine has been cultivated here since 779 AD. Your bike tour takes you along famous vineyards such as Teufelskeller, Marsberg, and Sonnenstuhl on the Main Cycle Route with magnificent views, directly to Würzburg. Your bike tour then takes you to Thüngersheim, a wine village known for specialties such as Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Rieslaner. A visit to the modern wine shop offers the perfect opportunity to convince yourself of the skill of the Thüngersheim winemakers.
Example of hotel: Hotel Mainpromenade in Karlstadt
  • Day 5 - From Karlstadt to Homburg, approx. 60 km

Today, the landscape of your cycling tour along the Main Cycle Route changes noticeably: the characteristic vineyards give way to the shady Spessart forests. If you want to make the day's stage more comfortable, you can shorten the route with Deutsche Bahn: in just 10 minutes you can reach Gemünden or Lohr in 25 minutes. Both options leave enough room for relaxed cycling while still allowing you to enjoy the most beautiful sections of this stage tour. Afterwards, you cycle directly along the Main for around 28 idyllic kilometers to your destination for the day, Homburg. This romantic wine village is famous for its excellent vineyards, Edelfrau and Kallmuth, where top-quality wines with a distinctive terroir thrive.
Example of hotel: Homburger Bräuscheuere in Homburg
  • Day 6 - From Homburg to Bürgstadt, approx. 45 km

Today's stage of the Main Cycle Route takes you first to Wertheim, where charming half-timbered houses, narrow streets, and a romantic, winding old town create a very special atmosphere. Shortly before Bürgstadt, the landscape changes again: vineyards reappear, heralding the region's famous red wine growing areas. Red wine grapes such as Pinot Noir and Frühburgunder grow here, making Bürgstadt and neighboring Miltenberg famous far beyond Franconia. A walk along the Red Wine Trail offers magnificent views of the vineyards, and St. Martin's Chapel, with its unique interior paintings, is considered one of the cultural and historical jewels of the region.
Example of hotel: Vinotel Weingut Helmstetter in Bürgstadt
  • Day 7 - From Bürgstadt to Aschaffenburg, approx. 45 km

Just a short distance away is Miltenberg, one of the most beautiful places on the Main Cycle Route. Continue cycling along the banks of the Main and parallel to the Red Wine Trail to Großheubach. Here, the vines grow on steep red sandstone terraces, the ideal foundation for fine red wine varieties such as Pinot Noir, Frühburgunder, Portugieser, and St. Laurent. On mostly flat paths, you then roll leisurely to Klingenberg, another renowned red wine village. At the end of your cycling tour, you reach Aschaffenburg, where the majestic sandstone Johannisburg Castle greets you from afar.
Example of hotel: City Hotel in Aschaffenburg
  • Day 8 - Individual departure or extra nights

Return from your cycling holidays by train or by bus from Aschaffenburg to Schweinfurt (every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 9 am, duration approx. 2hrs) please see rates below for more details.
