The Alpe-Adria Cycle Path enables a relaxed crossing of the Alps in just one week. The route leads from the idyllic Salzach Valley via Bad Gastein and the impressive Hohe Tauern, with the most challenging section comfortably bridged by train. The route continues through the sunny Drau Valley and the wildly romantic Canal Valley to the Grado lagoon and finally to the historic harbour city of Trieste. The Alpe-Adria Cycle Path combines nature, culture and enjoyment - ideal for anyone who wants to experience an easy yet impressive crossing of the Alps.

Day 1 - Individual arrival in Salzburg
Individual arrival in Salzburg – the perfect start to your cycling trip. A bike holiday could hardly begin more impressively than in the Mozart city of Salzburg: baroque highlights follow one another, and the charming old town invites you to explore. Treat yourself to a few authentic Mozartkugeln at the start – a sweet snack that will accompany you in style on your journey all the way to the sea.

Start your cycling tour along the Salzach with views of Hohensalzburg Fortress. Pass by Hellbrunn Palace with its famous water features, then continue along the Tauern Cycle Path toward Hallein, renowned for its “white gold” – salt. Another highlight is the impressive Golling Waterfall, perfect for a short stop along the route.

The cycling journey continues through the idyllic Gastein Valley. Framed by the peaks of the Hohe Tauern, you cycle along the Gasteiner Ache, passing Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein on the way to the famous spa town of Bad Gastein. Known as the “Monte Carlo of the Alps,” the town impresses with its magnificent Belle Époque hotels. The main highlight is the stunning Gastein Waterfall, fed by 17 springs, captivating cyclists and visitors alike.

From Böckstein, you cross the Tauern mountains by train and continue by bike from Mallnitz through the high-alpine landscape. You follow the Möll River through the Hohe Tauern National Park on the gently downhill Glockner Cycle Path. The route then leads along the Drau Cycle Path to Spittal an der Drau, known for Porcia Palace, and on to Villach, Carinthia's second-largest city, with its many sights and nearby lakes for a refreshing swim.

Following the Gail River, you leave Villach and reach Italy. In the tri-border region of Italy, Austria, and Slovenia lies the Canal Valley with the border town of Tarvisio, where different cultures have met for centuries. The cycling route leads through the impressive Friulian alpine landscape with unspoiled nature and dense forests. If you prefer, you can shorten part of the journey by taking the train (ticket not included) to Tarvisio or Ugovizza.

From Gemona del Friuli to Udine – a journey of culture and wine. Historic Gemona del Friuli impresses with its majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Along the route, vineyards line the way and invite you to enjoy small tastings. In Udine, you are welcomed by Venetian architecture, quiet squares, and striking Gothic and Renaissance buildings.

With the Sirocco breeze at your back, you cycle past reed landscapes and canals on your way to Grado.The historic fishing town of Grado is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic. Along the way, the UNESCO World Heritage town of Palmanova and the extensive archaeological site of ancient Aquileia invite you to stop and explore.

Experience the rugged Karst on your cycling tour toward the Adriatic Sea. Follow the stunning coastline and visit the magnificent Miramare Castle before arriving in the historic port city of Trieste. From Monfalcone, the stage can be shortened by train (ticket not included).

Hotel note: We make every effort to book the hotels mentioned by name. However, if one is not available, we will switch to an equivalent company.
Parking facilities
We recommend the public parking lot at the Messezentrum (convention centre) or at the train station in Salzburg.
Note for people with limited mobility
The cycle tour is not suitable for people with limited mobility. However, in specific cases it is possible to accommodate individual customer requests (e.g. barrier-free room).
Passport and visa requirements
To check in to your hotel you will need a valid passport or ID card.
For citizens of countries outside the Schengen area other regulations may apply. You are responsible for obtaining any visa you may require in good time.
Terms and Conditions of Payment:
The deposit of 10% of the tour price is due at the latest 14 days after receipt of the booking confirmation. The balance must be paid 14 days before arrival.
Cancellation Policy:
According to our General Terms and Conditions, the customer may withdraw from the contract at any time in writing. In the event of cancellation or non-commencement of travel, the following cancellation fees will become payable:
20% of the tour price up to 28 days before arrival date
30% of the tour price from 27th to 14th day before arrival date
50% of the tour price from 13th to 8th day before arrival date
70% of the tour price from 7th to 4th day before arrival date
95% of the tour price from the 3rd day until the 1st day before the start of the tour
100% of the tour price for no-show (day of arrival) and cancellation of the already started trip
If the customer makes changes of the date of travel up to 28 days before departure, we will charge a processing fee of € 75,00 per booking. After this date, the cancellation policy will apply. Such changes to a booking may only be made in individual cases and if possible; the customer has no right to any changes.
