Day 1 - Individual arrival in Salzburg
Welcome to the festival-, Mozart- and cultural city of Salzburg. Winding alleys and squares invite you to stroll and dreamy cafés to enjoy genuine Austrian coffee specialities. You can look forward to it, because this is exactly where your cycling tour along the Alpe-Adria Cycle Route starts.
Example of hotel: Hotel Zum Hirschen in SalzburgDay 2 - From Salzburg to St. Johann, approx. 65 km
Get on the saddle and cycle out of Salzburg and off towards the south. The bike tour in the Salzburger Land leads through shady meadows along the Salzach to Hallein. Hallein welcomes you with a romantic old town, small alleys, archways and houses with magnificent facades. The bike tour in Austria takes you past the gushing waterfall in Golling to St. Johann.
Example of hotel: Hotel Brückenwirt in St. JohannDay 3 - From St. Johann to Bad Gastein, approx. 40 km
The Gasteiner Ache accompanies you while cycling in Salzburg through the wild and romantic Gastein Valley. Via Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein you cycle to the well-known spa and winter sports resort of Bad Gastein at the foot of the Hohe Tauern-mountain chain. Probably the most famous landmark is the Gastein Waterfall in the middle of the town, which has always inspired painters and poets.
Example of hotel: Hotel Salzburger Hof in Bad GasteinDay 4 - From Bad Gastein to Spittal an der Drau, approx. 50 km + train ride
In the morning, it is only a stone's throw to Böckstein, from where a train from the Tauernschleuse will take you to the other side of the Alps, to Mallnitz, in just 10 minutes. First, you will cycle along the Möll River through impressive high mountain landscapes. Then you will continue along the Drau Cycle Path in Carinthia for the last few kilometres to Spittal an der Drau at a leisurely pace.
Example of hotel: Post Hotel mit EigenART in SpittalDay 5 - From Spittal an der Drau to Villach, approx. 40 km
The cycle tour along the Drau cycle path ends directly in Villach. The heart of the city is the charming old town with its southern flair and cosy 'Beisln' and restaurants. Perfect for a cosy end to your cycling tour in Carinthia and a nightcap before you continue your cycling tour to Italy the next day.
Example of hotel: Hotel Palais 26 in VillachDay 6 - From Villach to Tarvis, approx. 35 km
The last kilometres of the bike tour in Austria follow the Gail river to Tarvis, on the Italian border. The town is a successful example of the European idea in action - and has been for centuries. Austrians, Slovenes and Italians live together in peaceful co-existence and enrich your hometown with the three great European language families - Germanic, Romanic and Slavic.
Example of hotel: Hotel Edelhof in TarvisDay 7 - From Tarvis to Udine, approx. 65 km + train ride
On the well-maintained Pontebbana cycle path you cycle leisurely downhill through the Canal Valley and admire the beauty of the Friulian Alpine region from the saddle. The Gemona-Udine stretch is bridged by train. Once in Udine, you can enjoy the 'dolce vita' with a coffee in the 'piazza' or during a stroll through the alleys.
Example of hotel: Hotel Ambassador Palace in UdineDay 8 - From Udine to Grado, approx. 55 km
The last stage of your cycling holiday in Italy lies ahead of you. You cycle through wide reed landscapes and along small water channels towards the Gulf of Venice. You should definitely plan a visit to the Roman city of Aquileia (UNESCO World Heritage Site) before you reach the destination of your cycling tour on the Alpe-Adria Cycle Route. Grado is perfect for relaxing and unwinding: The extensive sandy beach, the historic harbour, the narrow alleys and the cosy restaurants exude Italian flair.
