Salzburg-Grado Alpe-Adria-Cycle Path – The Classic Tour
In one week across the Alps to the Adriatic Sea - that sounds like hard work! It is not quite as demanding if you choose the Alpe-Adria cycle path. Here, the crossing of the Alps is also feasible for pleasure cyclists, because the ascent to the main ridge of the Alps is divided into two daily stages, the last part is shortened by train. On the journey, you will cross the idyllic Salzach Valley, Bad Gastein, the impressive high mountain landscape of the Hohe Tauern, the sunny Drau Valley and the wildly rugged Kanal Valley. On the Via Julia Augusta you cycle comfortably via Palmanova and Aquileia to the lagoon of Grado.

Day 1 - Individual arrival in Salzburg
Individual arrival at the hotel in Salzburg. A cycling tour could not start more impressively than in the Mozart city of Salzburg. One baroque highlight follows the next in the beautiful old town. Take some Mozartkugeln with you on your journey to the sea. Example of hotel: Fourside HotelDay 2 - From Salzburg to St. Johann/Bischofshofen, approx. 65 km
With a view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress, you leave the city. The mountains are already visible in the distance. The first section takes you along the Salzach river. On the way, you pass the former summer residence of the Salzburg prince-bishops, Hellbrunn Palace. For more than 400 years, the extraordinary water features have delighted young and old. The journey continues along the Tauern Cycle Path towards Hallein, known for its warped town houses and above all for its white gold - salt. Another highlight is the waterfall in Golling. The Pongau Cathedral and stage destination is already visible from afar. Example of hotel: Hotel Stöcklwirt in St. JohannDay 3 - From St. Johann/Bischofshofen to Mölltal/Mallnitz, approx. 55 km + train ride
The journey continues through the tranquil Gastein Valley. Until the 20th century, it was only accessible via mountain paths and narrow roads. Framed by the peaks of the Hohe Tauern, you cycle along the Gasteiner Ache. Passing Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein, you reach the famous spa town of Bad Gastein. The 'Montecarlo of the Alps', as the town is often called, is known for its many magnificent hotels from the 'Bel Epouque' period, which dominate the townscape. The main attraction is the Gastein Waterfall, which is fed by a total of 17 springs. With many new impressions, you cycle on to Böckstein and board the train there to get to Mallnitz through the Tauern lock. You cycle downhill towards your accommodation. Example of hotel: Hotel Pacher in ObervellachDay 4 - From Mölltal/Mallnitz to Villach, approx. 70 km
Today you cycle along the river Möll through the impressive high mountain landscape. This section of the cycle path is also called the Glocknerradweg. It is mostly slightly downhill and leads through the Hohe Tauern National Park to Möllbrück. From there, the Drau Cycle Path leads to Spittal with its famous Renaissance castle Porcia. The stage ends in Carinthia's second largest city. Villach is not only known for its carnival, but also for its Kirchtag. In addition, numerous sights await you. If you still have enough time, we recommend a swim in one of the lakes around the city. Example of hotel: Hotel Voco in VillachDay 5 - From Villach to Venzone/surroundings, approx. 55 km with train ride (ticket not included)
Following the river Gail, you leave Villach behind and soon you are saying goodbye to Austria and hello to Italy. In the border triangle of Italy-Austria-Slovenia stretches the Canal Valley, whose centre is the Italian border town of Tarvis. Austrians, Slovenes, Friulians and Italians have lived together here for centuries, as all three major European language families - Germanic, Romanic and Slavic - meet directly here. Continuing through the Canal Valley, from the saddle you admire the beauties of the Friulian Alpine region with its intact, untouched nature and extensive forests. If you wish, you can take the train (ticket not included) to Ugovizza and thus shorten part of the route. Example of hotel: Hotel Carnia in VenzoneDay 6 - From Venzone/surroundings to Udine, approx. 55 km
Located at the southern exit of the Canal Valley and on the foothills of the Julian Alps, Gemona del Friuli is considered one of the most beautiful historic towns in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The town is dominated by the majestic Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, which is certainly worth a visit. Wine dominates today's stage. Vineyards along the cycle path invite you for a glass of wine. Udine, characterised by Venetian influences, radiates calm and tranquillity; you can admire important late Gothic and Renaissance buildings while having a coffee in the 'piazza' or strolling through the city centre. Example of hotel: Hotel Al Teatro in UdineDay 7 - From Udine to Grado, approx. 55 km
Accompanied by the breeze of the Scirocco, you glide past reed landscapes and water channels and arrive in Grado, a historic fishing town and one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic. Example of hotel: Hotel Diana in GradoDay 8 - Individual departure or extra nights
