Arrival for your cycling vacation. Check into your hotel in Salzburg. Explore the city of Salzburg on your own before starting your bike tour the next day. Tip: Enjoy an evening fortress concert at Hohensalzburg Fortress.
Example of hotel: Fourside Hotel in SalzburgDay 2 - From Salzburg to Bischofshofen/St. Johann, approx. 65 km
On your first day, you leave Salzburg on the cycle path along the Salzach. You cycle leisurely past the former summer residence of the Salzburg bishops, Hellbrunn Palace. The Tauern Cycle Path takes you towards Hallein, which is famous for its salt deposits and crooked town houses. You will also discover another highlight on your cycle tour, the waterfall in Golling.
Example of hotel:Hotel Stöcklwirt in St. JohannDay 3 - From Bischofshofen/St. Johann to Bad Gastein, approx. 40 km
Today your cycle tour begins in the cozy Gastein Valley, which until the 20th century was only accessible via mountain paths and narrow roads. Surrounded by the peaks of the Hohe Tauern, you cycle along the Gasteiner Ache. Via Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein you reach the famous spa town of Bad Gastein, which is known for its numerous magnificent hotels from the “Bel Époque” period. Don't miss the Gastein waterfall, which is fed by 17 springs.
Example of hotel: Hotel Mondi Bellevue Gastein in Bad GasteinDay 4 - From Bad Gastein to Villach, approx. 90 km by bike + train ride
In Böckstein, you board the train to get to Mallnitz via the Tauernschleuse lock. From there you cycle along the Möll river on the Glockner cycle path through the impressive high mountain landscape. Your cycle tour takes you slightly downhill through the Hohe Tauern National Park. From here, the Drau cycle path takes you to Spittal and on to Villach. Numerous sights await you. We also recommend a trip to the nearby lakes.
Example of hotel: Hotel Goldenes Lamm in VillachDay 5 - From Villach to Venzone/surroundings, approx. 55 km by bike + Train ride (ticket not included) or approx. 95 km
Following the river Gail, you leave Villach behind and soon you are saying goodbye to Austria and hello to Italy. In the border triangle of Italy-Austria-Slovenia stretches the Canal Valley, whose centre is the Italian border town of Tarvis. Austrians, Slovenes, Friulians and Italians have lived together here for centuries, as all three major European language families - Germanic, Romanic and Slavic - meet directly here. Continuing through the Canal Valley, from the saddle you admire the beauties of the Friulian Alpine region with its intact, untouched nature and extensive forests. If you wish, you can take the train (ticket not included) to Tarvis or Ugovizza and thus shorten part of the route.
Example of hotel: Hotel Alma Living in VenzoneDay 6 - From Venzone/surroundings to Udine, approx. 55 km
Today you will admire the small town of Gemona del Friuli, which is considered one of the most beautiful historical towns in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is very well known and is worth a visit. Today's cycling stage is characterized by wine. Countless vines line the cycle paths towards Udine and invite you to a taste. At the end of today's cycle tour, we recommend you visit the tranquil town of Udine. The Gothic and Renaissance buildings invite you to linger.
Example of hotel: Hotel Là di Moret in UdineDay 7 - From Udine to Grado, approx. 60 km
The last stage of your cycle tour takes you past reed landscapes and water canals to Grado, a historic fishing town and one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic. On the way, you will discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Palmanova and the excavations of the ancient city of Aquileia.
Example of hotel: Hotel Diana in GradoDay 8 - Individual departure or extra nights
