Alberobello-Lecce Puglia 2027 – Trulli & Adriatic Coast
Puglia, the sun-drenched south-east of Italy, is wonderful to discover by bike. On this individual cycle tour from Alberobello to Lecce you will experience the fascinating landscape between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea: white coastal towns, olive groves, vineyards and Mediterranean villages accompany you on your way. You will discover the famous trulli of Alberobello, the white Ostuni, the historic Gallipoli, Santa Maria di Leuca and the artistic Otranto. The crowning glory is Lecce with magnificent churches and palaces in the famous Leccese Baroque. Example of hotel: Hotel Ramapendula in AlberobelloDay 2 - From Alberobello to Ostuni, approx. 35 km
Today you start your cycle tour through Puglia and cycle through the picturesque Valle d'Itria. The hilly cultural landscape is characterised by vineyards, dry stone walls and the trulli typical of Puglia. Your destination is Ostuni, the famous 'white city' on a hill. From here there is a magnificent view over the surrounding countryside to the sea. Our recommendation: Choose the slightly longer variant via Martina Franca (approx. 10 km more). The charming baroque town is a worthwhile stopover and allows you to get to know even more of the charming landscape of the Valle d'Itria.
Example of hotel: Relais Sant'Eligio in OstuniDay 3 - From Ostuni to Manduria/Avetrana, approx. 60 km
From Ostuni, the cycle route leads through the typical landscape of Salento. Between extensive olive groves and orchards, the route heads south. In Manduria or Avetrana you will find a stage destination steeped in history. Along the route, you will repeatedly encounter traces of the ancient Appian Way, which once connected Rome with the south of Italy.
Example of hotel: Masseria Bosco in AvetranaDay 4 - From Manduria/Avetrana to Gallipoli, approx. 60 km
Today you will soon reach the coast of the Ionian Sea. The coastal road takes you past the Torre Colimena and numerous historic defensive towers to Porto Cesareo. Then you follow the coast to Gallipoli. The old town, located on an island, inspires with narrow streets, historic churches and an authentic southern Italian flair. At the harbour you can observe the traditional life of the fishermen.
Example of hotel:Popula in GallipoliDay 5 - From Gallipoli to Santa Maria di Leuca/surroundings, approx. 50 km
From Gallipoli you continue cycling along the varied coast of Salento. The destination is Santa Maria di Leuca, the southernmost point of Puglia and at the same time the watershed between the Ionian and Adriatic Seas. In addition to the pilgrimage church, magnificent villas from the turn of the century characterize the townscape. Enjoy the special atmosphere of this Mediterranean coastal town at the southernmost tip of Italy.
Example of hotel:Hotel L'Approdo in Santa Maria di LeucaDay 6 - From Santa Maria di Leuca/surroundings to Otranto, approx. 50 km
Today you change from the Ionian to the Adriatic Sea and follow the spectacular coast of Salento towards Otranto. The route leads through an impressive landscape with steep coastal sections and Mediterranean vegetation. On the way, you can make detours to the Grotta Zinzulusa and Santa Cesarea Terme. Once in Otranto, it is worth taking a walk through the historic old town with its mighty city wall and the imposing Castello.
Example of hotel:Hotel Valle dell'Idro in OtrantoDay 7 - From Otranto to Lecce, approx. 50 km
At the end of your cycle tour through Puglia, you first cycle a bit along the Adriatic coast before you reach the interior through extensive olive groves. Your destination is Lecce, the elegant capital of Salento. Magnificent churches, palaces and ornate facades make the city a special highlight of the trip. The famous Leccese Baroque is particularly worth seeing, but the Roman amphitheatre and the Roman theatre also invite you to travel back in time.
