Example of hotel: Hotel Goldenes Lamm in VillachDay 2 - From Villach to Tarvis/Camporosso, approx. 40 km
Following the Gail River, you leave Villach behind and soon bid farewell to Austria to welcome Italy. The Canal Valley stretches across the border triangle of Italy, Austria and Slovenia, with the Italian border town of Tarvisio at its centre. Austrians, Slovenes, Friulians and Italians have lived here together for centuries, and all three major European language families – Germanic, Romance and Slavic, meet here.
Example of hotel: Hotel Nevada in TarvisDay 3 - From Tarvis/Camporosso to Tolmezzo/Venzone, approx. 55 km
The starting point for today's cycling stage is Tarvisio, a small town surrounded by wide valleys and forests. Modern in appearance, with an ancient soul and rich in tradition, Tarvisio is not only one of the most important mountain resorts in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, but also one of the region's skiing strongholds. The Alpe-Adria Cycle Route then takes you through the Canal Valley, where you can admire the unspoilt nature and extensive forests of the Friulian Alps from the saddle.
Example of hotel: Hotel Alma Living in VenzoneDay 4 - From Tolmezzo/Venzone to Udine, approx. 60 km
You leave the Julian Alps and follow the Tagliamento River to Gemona del Friuli, a medieval gem with the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Continue cycling through vineyards and Cormor Park to Udine, the historic capital of Friuli. The city with its Venetian flair invites you to stroll across the piazza, visit Gothic and Renaissance buildings and enjoy a glass of wine at the traditional ‘Tajut'.
Example of hotel: Hotel Là di Moret in UdineDay 5 - From Udine to Grado, approx. 55 km
From the castle hill in Udine, the route descends into the fertile Friuli plain, rich in waterways and historical monuments. Halfway along the route, you pass Palmanova, built as a model of an ideal star-shaped city with impressive fortifications. Accompanied by the Scirocco breeze, you glide past reed beds and water channels before reaching Grado – a historic fishing town and one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic. Along the way, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aquileia and the extensive excavation sites of the ancient city invite you to visit.
Example of hotel: Hotel Diana in GradoDay 6 - Culture in Aquileia or rest day by the sea
Plan Day 6 of your cycling holiday in Italy according to your preferences: either an exciting day of sightseeing in Aquileia, the ancient Roman city known as the ‘Second Rome', with Roman ruins, ancient churches and secluded lagoon landscapes – or a relaxing day of swimming in the Adriatic Sea, with miles of sandy beaches and warm sunshine in a deckchair. It's entirely up to you.
Example of hotel: Hotel Diana in GradoDay 7 - From Grado to Trieste, approx. 40 km by bike + Train ride (ticket not included)
The rugged karst landscape of the hinterland accompanies you on your cycle tour through Friuli-Venezia Giulia before you cycle towards the breathtakingly beautiful coastal area. It is worth stopping at the former Habsburg castle of Miramare before entering the old port and trading city of Trieste, a fitting end to your cycling holiday in Italy. If you wish, you can shorten the stage from Monfalcone by taking the train (ticket not included in the price).
