At the start of your cycling holiday along the Danube Cycle Path, check in at the hotel and receive your travel documents for the upcoming cycle tour. Take your first walks, for example a leisurely stroll through the old town or dinner with a view of the Danube. Linz welcomes you with a lively atmosphere and artistic flair.
Example of hotel: ARCOTEL Nike in Linz
  • Day 2 - Experience Linz by bike

Today you can discover Linz on two wheels - in a relaxed manner as part of your cycling holiday and with many cultural highlights: The Ars Electronica Centre delights with interactive media art, while the Lentos Art Museum displays important works of classical modernism. As you cycle through the Mural Harbour, you will come across oversized murals in the old industrial harbour - an open-air museum of street art. History is not neglected either: the Old Cathedral with the Bruckner organ, Linz Castle or a ride up the Pöstlingberg with a view of the Danube. In the afternoon, enjoy a Linzer Torte in a traditional café - a sweet end to this multi-faceted cycle tour and your cycling holiday. Example of hotel: ARCOTEL Nike in Linz
  • Day 3 - From Linz to Grein, approx. 60 km

Today you cycle eastwards along the Danube Cycle Path in Austria - past lush greenery and historic sites. If you like, stop off at the Mauthausen memorial - a moving place of remembrance. At the end of the stage, you reach the charming little town of Grein, where the magnificent Greinburg Castle and the oldest municipal theatre in Austria bring history to life. Example of hotel: Hotel Schatzkammer in Burg Kreuzen
  • Day 4 - From Grein to Melk, approx. 50 km

A day full of nature and history awaits you on your cycling holiday: Cycle through the once wildly flowing Strudengau - today a natural paradise with tranquil Danube floodplains and wooded slopes - and continue your cycle tour along the Danube Cycle Path in Austria to Melk. You will recognise the impressive Melk Abbey, one of the most important Baroque ensembles in Europe, from afar. A visit to the magnificent library and the abbey church is a must for culture lovers.
Example of hotel: Hotel Zur Post in Melk
  • Day 5 - From Melk to Krems, approx. 40 km

Today you cycle through the heart of the Wachau - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the epitome of the Austrian way of life. Your cycle tour along the Danube Cycle Path takes you through a picture-book landscape with vineyards, old dry stone walls and medieval villages such as Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein. If you like, you can stop off for a little wine tasting or visit the ruins of Dürnstein Castle, where King Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned. This section of your cycling holiday ends in Krems with a mix of old town flair, galleries and cosy cafés.
Example of hotel: Arte Hotel Krems in Krems
  • Day 6 - From Krems to Vienna, approx. 40 km (train ride from Krems to Tulln)

Continue comfortably by train to the garden city of Tulln - a relaxing stopover on your cycling holiday along the Danube Cycle Path in Austria. DIE GARTEN TULLN, Europe's first ecological garden show, invites you to linger with its fragrance and colours before you continue cycling towards Klosterneuburg. Once you arrive in Vienna, the baroque Schönbrunn Palace awaits you with its parks and state rooms - a cultural highlight of your cycle tour. In the evening, enjoy a classic Sacher Torte in a traditional coffee house - or round off the day at a wine tavern with music and delicacies.
Example of hotel: ARCOTEL Wimberger in Vienna
  • Day 7 - Experience Vienna – with overview and favourite places

A whole day for the cultural metropolis on the Danube! Even off the saddle, your cycling holiday along the Danube Cycle Path will be an experience. With the included 24-hour hop-on hop-off ticket, you can explore Vienna in comfort and at your own pace. Hop off where you want to go: to the imposing St Stephen's Cathedral, through the imperial Hofburg Palace, to the baroque Belvedere Palace or to the multifaceted Museum Quarter. If you like, visit the Kunsthistorisches Museum or treat yourself to a stroll through the Naschmarkt whilst cycling through the city. In the afternoon, perhaps a little break in a coffee house . A classical concert or a stroll along the Ringstrasse rounds off your cycle tour in style - the crowning glory of an unforgettable holiday by bike.

Cycle path info

Austrian Danube

Cycle Path - Austrian Danube

Length: The Danube Cycle Path in Austria - starting in Passau and finishing in Vienna - is 326 kilometers long.

Route description: The Danube cycle path Passau - Vienna is very well developed. The Danube cycle path in Austria is asphalted practically everywhere. You cycle along roads with little traffic on your bike tours, usually even on both sides of the river.

Signposting: On your cycle tour in Austria, follow the special signposts.  The cycle paths in Upper and Lower Austria are marked with green, rectangular signs. The Danube cycle path in Austria is marked as such by name in most cases. (R1 in Upper Austria). Regional cycle paths connect to it.

Sights along the Danube Cycle Path Passau - Vienna

Passau: The city of three rivers welcomes you warmly on your cycle tour in Austria. This is where the Ilz and Inn flow into the Danube, causing it to swell into a mighty river. In Passau, the picturesque old town invites you to take a tour before the start of your cycle tour in Austria, which will certainly take you to Passau Cathedral with the largest church organ in the world. The Veste Oberhaus towers high above Passau.

Engelszell Abbey: Austria's only Trappist monastery is located almost directly on the Danube Cycle Path. In addition to the beautiful collegiate church, you should also visit the store on your cycling vacation in Austria, which sells excellent liqueurs from the monastery's own production.

Schlögener Schlinge: A mighty natural spectacle can be seen directly on the Danube cycle path during your cycle tour from Passau to Vienna. The river meanders around an extremely resistant rock formation. The short but steep climb to Schlögener Blick is definitely worth it. The full dimension of this attraction is revealed to you during the cycle tour in Austria.

Linz: This up-and-coming city stretches along both sides of the Danube in Upper Austria. We recommend a stroll through the charming old town with its baroque town houses. The Ars Electronica Center - Museum of the Future and the LENTOS Art Museum are located directly on the Danube Cycle Path. Cyclists who have more time at their disposal are recommended to take a ride up the Pöstlingberg on the steepest adhesion railroad in Europe. The voestalpine Stahlwelt opens the door to the world of steel in a unique way. Discover the development from pig iron to steel and stainless steel grades with the help of impressive exhibits and interactive stations. In the evening, Europe's most modern music theater attracts visitors to a performance.

Wachau: The UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau stretches between Melk and Krems in Lower Austria. The Danube Cycle Path leads directly through this famous Lower Austrian wine region. Even the Romans cultivated wine in terraces to the left and right of the Danube. Don't miss out on a visit to a wine tavern to sample the tangy Grüner Veltliner. Melk Benedictine Abbey can be seen from afar from the Danube Cycle Path. It impresses with its magnificent rooms and a well-known abbey library.

Vienna: Austria's capital is the destination of your cycle tour along the Danube Cycle Path. Numerous sights invite you to visit: Schönbrunn Park and Palace, the Prater, the Ringstrasse with its numerous magnificent buildings, the Hofburg and much more. Not forgetting the countless theaters, above all the Burgtheater, the Vienna State Opera and smaller variety theaters offer entertaining hours in the evening.
