Day 2 - Copenhagen–Horsholm, approx ca. 30 kmBiking through Copenhagen is a fantastic tour start. You will follow the cycle path along the coastline enjoying the magnificent view to Sweden, passing the Little Mermaid and the Queen's residence Amalienborg. You will be enchanted by the sight of the fashionable houses and pass the famous beach “Bellevue” before you continue to Dyrehaven, the Royal hunting grounds, with century old trees and herds of deer. Located here is also “Bakken”, the oldest amusement park in the world. In Rungsted you cycle past Karen Blixen's house and museum, “Rungstedlund” and in Humlebæk you can take a look at the Museum of Modern Art “Louisiana”, or stop for lunch and coffee at the marinas along the bike route overlooking the water. You will end up in Snekkersten, formerly a fishing village, close to Helsingør. (Rungstedlund is closed Mondays except in July/August. Louisiana is always closed Mondays, but if you wish to see the exhibition it is only a short way back from Snekkersten). Example of hotel: Kokkedal Slot
Day 3 - Horsholm–Helsinger, approx. 20 kmHighly recommended is the 2 km bike route from Snekkersten to Helsingør and the impressive Kronborg Castle (renowned from Shakespeare`s play Hamlet) and the historical city centre. Also the Danish Maritime Museum listed on the New York Times' list: ”52 places to go in 2014” is a “must” because of it's fantastic architecture and exciting exhibition. If those attractions take your time don't worry. You can choose between 3 bike tours in Sweden, if you are in lack of time. On the longest stage you cycle to the rocky peninsula “Kullen”, or you choose shorter stages. The ferry to Sweden runs every 15 minutes (not included) for a roundtrip. Example of hotel: Strand- & Badehotel Marienlyst
Day 4 - Roadtour Helsingør, approx. 35 kmHornbæk with nice restaurants and the best beach on the North coast is your first stop today. The cycle tour continues gentle up and down – sometimes close to the beach sometimes through the dunes overlooking the sea to the charming village of Gilleleje. Continue cycling into the woodlands following the bike unpaved path to the large forest, Grib Skov, where the King of Denmark had his hunting grounds in the past and along Esrum Lake. Today's destination is Hillerød, with an old and picturesque city centre and the beautiful Frederiksborg Castle - through the time residence for many Danish kings. Longer alternative: Keep cycling along the coast to Tisvildeleje - the gate to the National Park of Tisvilde Hegn, and a popular summer seaside resort. From here you continue the regional cycle route to Hillerød. Example of hotel: Strand- & Badehotel Marienlyst
Day 5 - Helsingør–Hillerød, ca. 41-51 kmFrom the rural countryside you head for the Roskilde Bay, where you will find charming stops for a break. Roskilde is yet another highlight on the tour. The Cathedral in Roskilde is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds 38 burial plots of Danish kings and queens. Do not forget to visit the harbour where you can see the Viking Ship Museum, the Viking ships and the boat yard. Example of hotel: Hotel Hillerod
Day 6 - Hillerød–Kopenhagen, approx. 38 kmToday you will return to the coast side while approaching Copenhagen from southwest. You cycle through picturesque villages to the beaches south of the capital. A path takes you along the coast, away from the traffic, all the way to the centre of Copenhagen. Along the way you will pass “Arken” – a museum of modern art, the island “Amager” with the Freetown Christiania, a self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood, and Christianshavn and several interesting architectural sights when your bike tour leads along the canal between Zealand and the island Amager.
