By bike & boat 2020 - North Holland - De Holland

8 Days/7 Nights
30–65 km by bike daily, flat throughout,
Well-developed cycle paths, side streets,
River cruise ship, 34 cabins

Explore areas steeped in tradition in the level "Polderland" on your bike and boat tour in Holland on the North Sea and romantic harbour towns on the IJsselmeer. You cycle through the former sea area and marshland which was drained for over 3 centuries slowly with the help of windmills. Fertile Polderland sceneries, quiet cycle paths, the miles long North Sea beach and the breath-taking sandy dunes alternate on your bike and boat holiday in North Holland. The North Sea Island Texel counts for many visitors to the climaxes of their cycling holiday in Holland. Charming sceneries, small dreamy farming villages and picturesque harbour towns in the Ijsselmeer are typical for the second part of the bike and boat trip in North Holland. Your bike and boat trip in Holland offers still much more places of interest: the open-air museum "Zaanse Schans", the old town of Alkmaar and the harbour towns of Medemblik, Enkhuizen, Hoorn and Volendam. Of course the canal town of Amsterdam is climaxes of the north route through the province Noord Holland.

  • Day 2 - Boat trip Amsterdam–Zaandam, Zaandam––„Zaanse Schans“–Alkmaar, approx. 44 km by bike

The first bike trip of this tour takes you via small villages through the beautiful flat and green polder landscape. The first stop is at the Zaanse Schans open air museum (free entry) with its traditional Old Dutch wooden houses, windmills and the cheese- and clog factory. After this visit you will cycle through the “Land of Leeghwater”, a green polder area between Amsterdam, Alkmaar and Hoorn. Stroll through the former whaler's village De Rijp and pass by the windmills of Schermerhorn. Your ship De Holland will be waiting for you near the historical city centre of Alkmaar.
  • Day 3 - Alkmaar–Alkmaar, bike tour approx. 33-40 km, boat trip Alkmaar– Den Helder

Today you can discover the beautiful North-Holland Dune reserve. This is a 5.300 hectare large forest- and dune area with its unique landscapes. In these dunes the drinking water for almost the whole province of North-Holland is gained. After a visit to the beach and artists village Bergen you will return to Alkmaar where you can visit the wonderful city centre. In the afternoon De Holland will sail over the North-Holland Canal to the navy harbour of Den Helder.
  • Day 4 - Boat trip Helder–Oudeschild, North Sea Island round trip from/to Oudeschild, your choice approx. 15–65 km by bike, boat trip Texel–Den Oever

During breakfast De Holland will sail to the isle of Texel, where you can make a tour on the largest of the Dutch North Sea Isles. You will cycle through beautiful natural parks and have the opportunity for a stop and some bathing at the beach. Suggestion: Cycle the beautiful “Thijsse-route” (with signposting, approx. 25 miles) through picturesque villages and landscapes and visit the seal sanctuary “Ecomare” At the end of your cycling tour you can enjoy a locally brewed beer during a visit to the small brewery near Oudeschild. During dinner De Holland will return to the mainland and sail to Den Oever. The highlight of the evening will be a night of live music on board.
  • Day 5 - Boat trip Den Oever–Stavoren, Stavoren round trip south-west–Friesland, bike tour approx. 43-55 km

The vessel will cross the large inland lake IJsselmeer to sail to Stavoren in the Province of Friesland. You can choose a shorter or longer cycling tour: Discover the nature area of Gaasterland or explore a part of the wide Lake District that Friesland is well-known for. You can also combine both options. Night in the small harbour of Stavoren, one of the famous traditional 11 cities of Friesland.
  • Day 6 - Stavoren-Medemblik, Medemblik–Hoorn–Enkhuizen, bike tour approx. 30–50 km

De Holland will cross the IJsselmeer again during breakfast. Take the short bike trip from Medemblik along the IJsselmeer coast directly to Enkhuizen, where you can spend the afternoon. Enkhuizen is an old city with many centuries of maritime tradition. The “herring city” boasts a beautiful old harbour, an historical old town centre and the very interesting Zuiderzee Museum. If you prefer a longer cycling tour, ride from Medemblik to the former Dutch East India Company town of Hoorn, in the 17th century one of the world's leading harbours. Enjoy your lunch break and make a short stroll in the old city centre. Continue by bike to Enkhuizen via some picturesque rural villages. In the evening you can join a short city walk.
  • Day 7 - Boat trip Enkhuizen–Volendam, Volendam–Waterland–Amsterdam, bike tour approx. 35–50 km

During breakfast the ship will sail to Volendam. Your final day of cycling will lead you through the beautiful area of Waterland, with its hundreds of small lakes and tiny canals. Near Volendam you will have the opportunity to visit a cheese farm. Recommended (extra cycling miles) is a tour to the former island of Marken, to continue through the water shaped region of Waterland back to the Dutch capital city of Amsterdam. The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy everything Amsterdam has to offer. If you didn't go for a canal cruise on the first day, you can do so today.
  • Day 8 - Individual departure to Amsterdam

After breakfast disembarkation from the De Holland and individual departure from your bike and boat holiday in Holland.

De Holland

River cruise ship: „ De Holland”
De Holland is a 257 ft. long and 24 ft. wide cozy river cruise ship. The vessel has 34 cabins for max. 68-72 passengers. All of the rooms are well-equipped outside cabins.
The lower deck has 24 twin cabins. Five twin cabins and 16 “superior” twin cabins have separate beds, set next to each other as a hotel style bed (78 x 62 inches). The suite (approx. 140 sq. ft.) has the same amenities as the superior twin cabins, but is larger and – in addition – also has a mini-bar and a sofa bed as optional third bed. All upper premium deck cabins and the suite have a “French Balcony” (floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors) instead of a regular window.
Beds in most cabins are normally set as hotel-style beds (78 x 62 inches) or, optional, on previous request, can be arranged as 2 separate single beds (78 x 31 inches).

OÖ Touristik GmbH

In 1990 the OÖ Touristik performed a pioneering work on the sector of organised cycle holidays: the first bookable cycle tour along the Danube including luggage transfer. Already a year later we offered the first group tours. Over the years the offers of the cycle holidays has expanded throughout Europe and are as popular as ever. During the last 30 years we have expanded the portfolio on mountain bike tours, cycle holidays by bike and boat, group tours and hiking holidays as well as winter and wellness holidays. The organisation and handling of international congresses and events meanwhile adds to the successful enterprise sections.
